This year we will be continuing a bit of tradition. I am inviting some of the top players from the previous Final to this year’s Final. Each year will still be dependent on the space available and the number of stores participating. I sent out a few questions to the current Finalists to get a glimpse of history, insight, perspective, and advise.
Will plays in the Birmingham area and is taking Brad Waugh’s spot since Brad will not be able to commit to the Final. Will took 5th in the 2013 CAGE Match and also took Best General at NashCon.
JBW: Hey Will, Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. So how did you get into 40K?
I got into 40k about 12 years ago. Walked into a games store an just new I wanted to play this, so I bought the 3rd edition starter box of Space Marines an Dark Eldar.
JBW: What other Games/ Systems do you play?
Only 40k and a little X-Wing.
JBW: Do you have other armies? Would you mind giving us a quick list of them?
Eldar, Space Wolves, Guard for now but have small bits of Dark Eldar, Tau, and I used to play Tyranids.
JBW: In your opinion what do you think makes a good tournament player?
A player that gets a lot of games in, knows their army inside and out, and also knows what tricks there opponents are gonna try. Good knowledge of all the codices is never a bad thing.
JBW: What qualities do you think you need to bring to this event and tournaments in general?
Lots of practice against all types of lists.
JBW: There will be even more players this year that you haven’t met or played before. Is there any tips you would share on playing new players?
I would tell them to play to the mission, and don’t give up when it may look like all is lost.
JBW: So to put you on the spot; who do you think is player to beat this year?
Shawn won last year and has been on a roll winning tournaments so he’s probably the favorite.
JBW: You had some tough matchups last year with you pre-updated Eldar. What did you learn in those situations last time that you plan on using this year?
Biggest thing is practice. You need to have a game plan going into a tough match-up that you know works. And playing the mission to get the win.
JBW: Say there was someone reading this who wants to try and qualify for the 2013 Cage Match at their local store. What advice would you give them?
Most important thing is have fun. We’re grown ass men playing with plastic toys. It’s not that important, so have fun an meet some new people in which you share a great hobby.
JBW: Well thanks again for doing the interview.
