Last year I polled the known Finalists that received byes. This year I want to expand that as much as I can to the rest of the state. I sent out a few questions to the 2014 Finalists to get a glimpse of history, insight, perspective, and advise.

I met Doug last year at the 2012 CAGE Match and didn’t get to spend too much time with him. The schedule is packed at the Final and I hope that we can have a meet and greet this year. So I’m glad Doug had a chance to respond. This is Doug’s second time to qualify at FANATIX.

JBW: Hey Doug, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. So how did you get into 40K?

I think what drew me to 40k was playing a fantastic Dark Heresy campaign and seeing some of the older models friends were using as character representations. So I decided to get into the game with a couple of friends who had played before and wanted to get back into it during fifth edition.

JBW: Do you have other armies? Would you mind giving us a quick list of them?

Yes. Daemons, Chaos Marines, Grey Knights, and some small groups of Guard and Tau

JBW: What’s your favorite part of the game, is it the hobby, gaming, or something else?

I would say my favorite part of the game is a mixture of the hobby, gaming, and in a small way collecting. I probably enjoy painting, assembling, and a recent addition converting the most because it lets your own style show in your armies.

JBW: In your opinion what qualities do you think makes for a good tournament player, or a good player overall?

First and most importantly is someone who is a good sport regardless of the game result. Another quality I believe to be important is to have a good foundational knowledge of the rules, especially those that apply to your army. This way there is less time spent consulting the rulebook / codex and the game gains a flow to it, rather than feeling like you are stuck in rush hour traffic with constant stop-starting.

JBW: What sorts of events are promoted at FANATIX, and what yearly events are planned that the readers could look to travel to?

FANATIX currently runs monthly tournaments. With this past year’s Fanaticon being a success, we are thinking about trying to do a bigger tournament this next year during the con.
